Robert C "Cobby" Dorn was born on November 13, 1923 in Hartland, Wisconsin. He attended Hartland High School where he played football, basketball and pitched for the school baseball team. Dorn graduated in 1942 and worked for the Waukesha Motor Company and continued to play baseball in the local area for Hartland's Land o' Brooks and Land o' Lakes team.

 

Dorn entered military service with the Marine Corps on January 25, 1943 and received basic training at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. He later served in Hawaii and was a pitching star with the Marines baseball team.

 

Private First Class Dorn was seriously wounded in action on Saipan. He was evacuated to a hospital ship and died on board on July 13, 1944.

 

"The third Gold Star," wrote the Hartland News on August 25, 1944, "was added to Harland's Honor Roll on Sunday when memorial services were held for Private Robert Dorn, who was killed in one of the battles of the South Pacific.
